For my weekly segment on KSUE, I was asked about the reasons for parents not disciplining their children anymore. They are coming to school at younger and younger ages without having basic social skills. They use up a LOT of teacher time and disrupt other students.
It was my experience over the course of 24 years in private practice that parents were overly concerned about hurting their little darlings' feelings if they denied them ANYTHING! I know, I couldn't believe it myself.
Once I explained that their fears will push kids into sociopathic behavior, that really got their attention.
I also asked them to anticipate how they will feel standing in a courtroom when the judge sentences their now-young adult kids to jail time because they didn't take the time to socialize them, teach them values and a moral code.
By not disciplining them (discipline=disciple=teaching), you leave them to figure it out for themselves.
Your failure as a parent, and as your kid's first teacher, is not their fault, but society WILL make it their responsibility. You choose. It's all on you.
